The arrival of cranes comes mainly during the second fortnight of October, steadily increasing in numbers until reaching maximum population numbers between December and January. The earliest arrivals occur in the first few weeks of October (occasionally in September) and the last remaining birds can be seen until the beginning of April. Occasionally there are specimens who do not migrate and who may stay during the summer, but these are usually weak, sick or injured birds.
