Northern Pintail (Anas acuta)

The male is coloured dark chocolate brown on the head, throat and nape of the neck. The breast, belly and a band on both sides of the neck are white. The upperparts and flanks are grey. A black rear with a whitish patch on each side. A very long, black, pointed tail. The female has a mottled brown plumage, standing out from other females of the species on account of the pointed tail and the long, thin neck. Both sexes have a brownish speculum and a white-edged upper wing. A bluish bill.

During the nesting period it can be found in wetlands (rivers, lagoons and marshes), generally speaking in open ground, such as grazing lands, tidal flats deltas, etc. In winter, in large expanses of freshwater (reservoirs, water holes and lagoons), tidal flats, river pools and coastal areas (river mouths, brackish waters and estuaries).
