Alange Sector (Badajoz)
Core Sites:
- Don Benito
- Guareña
- Alange
- Retamal
- Los Molinos
- Usagre
Description:
This extensive territory stretching between las Vegas del Guadiana and Campiña Sur comprises 6 fairly important core sites which occupy widely varied habitats, including Holm Oak wood pasture, cereal and leguminous fields, irrigated lands and grazing land. The most stable core sites are those which establish their roosts at reservoirs (Los Molinos and Alange reservoirs), ensuring the presence of birds each wintering period and taking in populations from neighbouring core sites in dry years. The birds' foraging areas are extensive on occasion and finding groups of birds can prove difficult.
Population:
3.000 – 4.000 birds
Where to see Common Cranes:
Access to the tails of the Alange reservoir can be gained from Palomas and Almendralejo, having previously passed through the feeding areas. The Los Molinos reservoir is accessible by trails from Hinojosa del Valle and from Llera, which bring you into close proximity with the areas most frequented by the birds.
